Delhi was ruled by a Muslim Sultanate for 320 years from 1206 to 1526 AD. This period is known as the Sultanate age.

List of Delhi Sultanate Dynasties.

  1. Slave Dynasty (1206–1290 AD)
  2. Khilji Dynasty (1290–1320 AD)
  3. Tughlaq Dynasty (1320–1414 AD)
  4. Syed Dynasty (1414–1451 AD)
  5. Lodi Dynasty (1451–1526 AD)

DELHI SULTANATE SLAVE DYNASTY

Qutbuddin Aibak (1206–1210 AD)

  • Qutbuddin was a slave of Mohammad Ghori, who later became a general.
  • When Mohammad Ghori handed over the leadership of India to him, he became the founder of the Slave dynasty.
  • Laid the foundation of Qutub Minar.
  • In Ajmer, Dhai Dinka Zopda’ was built
  • Died in 1210 by falling from the horse.
  • Qutbuddin Aibak was the first Delhi Sultanate ruler.

ILTUTMISH (1210–1236)

  • After the death of Qutbuddin, his son Aramshah became the ruler, but as he was not fit to rule, Iltutmish took over the rule.
  • He completed the work of Qutub Minar.
  • He started a land donation scheme instead of a salary.
  • He was the first ruler to hold the title of ‘Sultan’ and establish an independent sultanate.
  • He introduced silver ‘tako’ and copper ‘jital’ coins.

RAZIA SULTANA

  • Razia Sultan was the first and last ruler to ascend the throne of Delhi.
  • Razia, dressed as a soldier, stopped the practice of curtains, sat on an elephant, and walked among the people.
  • Razia married Altunia for diplomatic reasons.
  • Meanwhile, Bahramshah, a son of Iltutmish, came to Delhi from Bhatinda to take power and defeated Razia and Atulia and killed them.

BALBAN (1266–1286 AD)

DELHI SULTANATE KHILJI DYNASTY

Jalaluddin Firoz khilji (1290–1296 AD)

  • Destroying the slave Dynasty, Jalaluddin Khiji established the Khilji Dynasty on June 13, 1290.
  • Jalaluddin’s nephew Alauddin killed Jalaluddin on July 19, 1296, and he became the sultan of Delhi.

DELHI SULTANATE TUGHLAQ DYNASTY

Gyasuddin Tughlaq (1320–1325 AD)

  • He was the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty.
  • His original name was Ghazi Malik.
  • He established a town called Tughlakabad near Delhi and made it his capital.
  • He built canals. Gyasuddin was the first sultan to build canals.
  • Mohammad Bin Tughlaq killed Gyasuddin in 1325 and became sultan himself.

DELHI SULTANATE LODI DYNASTY (1451–1526 AD)

Bahlul Lodi (1451–1489 AD)

  • Lodi dynasty was founded by Bahlul Lodi, the first ruler of Afgan to rule the Delhi Sultanate.
  • He introduced a coin ‘ Baheloli’, which remained in circulation till the time of Akbar.
  • Bahlul Lodi sat among his courtiers instead of sitting on the throne.
  • Bahlul died in 1489.

Sikandar Lodi (1489–1517 AD)

  • The original name of Sikandar Lodi was Nizam Khan.
  • Sikandar Lodi was considered the strongest leader of the Lodi dynasty.
  • He started a new measure for a land survey called ‘Gaj-e-Sinkadari’.
  • He established Agra in 1504 and made it it’s capital in 1506.
  • Sikander Lodi used to write poems in Persian under the pseudonym ‘Gulrukh’.
  • Sikander Lodi was a very religiously intolerant ruler among the Delhi sultanate rulers.

Ibrahim Lodi (1517–1526 AD)

  • Ibrahim Lodi was the last Delhi sultanate ruler and the Lodi dynasty.
  • During the reign of Ibrahim Lodi, most of the time was spent in conflict.
  • Ibrahim Lodi lost two battles with Rana Sanga.
  • Ibrahim Lodi had to fight with his Afghan chiefs.
  • On April 21, 1526, Ibrahim Lodi was defeated by Babur in the first battle of Panipat and died in the battle.
  • This marked the end of the Delhi Sultanate.
