PARAMILITARY FORCES IN INDIA OR SECURITY FORCES

ASSAM RIFLES (AR)

  • Is the oldest police force in the country
  • Established in 1835 in the form of Kachar Levi.
  • The headquarters is in Shillong.
  • Works for the internal security of the north-eastern states and the protection of the Myanmar border, also known as the friend of the mountain people.
  • Initially, it was known as Kachar Levi, but in 1883 its name was changed to frontier police.
  • In 1891 its name was changed to Assam Military police.
  • In 1903 its name was changed to East Bengal and Assam Military Force.
  • In 1917 its name was changed to Assam Rifles.
  • There are now 46 battalions of Assam Rifles.

BORDER SECURITY FORCE (BSF)

  • It was established in 1965.
  • The headquarters is in Delhi.
  • Deployed on Indian borders connected with neighboring countries.
  • Deployed on the international border of Pakistan and Bangladesh and the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir.

CENTRAL INDUSTRIAL SECURITY FORCE (CISF)

  • It was established in 1969, but its current form has been in effect since June 15, 1983.
  • Its main function is to protect nuclear power plants, space exploration, heavy engineering, etc.
  • Currently providing security to 289 units.
  • Provides fire protection shield to 80 industrial units.

CENTRAL RESERVE POLICE FORCE (CRPF)

  • Initially formed on 27 July 1939 in Madhya Pradesh.
  • After independence, on 28th December 1949 under the CRPF Act, it was renamed as Central Reserve Police Force.
  • The headquarters is in Delhi.

RAPID ACTION FORCE (RAF)

  • The Rapid Action Force was formed from the CRPF on December 11, 1991, and become fully operational in October 1992.
  • The main purpose of the Rapid Action Force is to quickly bring sectarian riots under control.
  • Rapid Action Force is used to controlling floods, earthquakes, other natural disasters, and terrorist attacks.
  • The Rapid Action Force currently has 10 battalions.

INDO TIBETAN BORDER POLICE (ITBP)

  • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force was established on October 24, 1962.
  • The force is deployed on the international border to India, China, and Myanmar.
  • The force has specialized training in mountaineering, disaster management, and combating biological as well as chemical disasters.
  • The headquarters is in Delhi.
  • Peacekeeping force at the UN.

NATIONAL SECURITY GUARD (NSG)

  • The National Security Guard was established in 1984.
  • The headquarters is in Delhi.
  • The force was formed to deal with internal unrest in the states and terrorist activities.
  • The National Security Guard consists of two divisions, the Special Action Group, which consists of the Army, and the Special Rangers Group, which consists of the Central/ State Police Force.
  • The National Security Guard is used for VVIP security, terrorist attacks, security operations at airports.
  • NSG commandos are also Known as Black Cats

RAILWAY PROTECTION FORCE (RPF)

  • The Railway Security Force was established under the Railway Security Force Act, 1957.
  • Railway security, the safety of passengers is the main function of the Railway Security Force.
  • RPF is different from the State Railway Police.

COMMANDO BATTALION FOR RESOLUTE ACTION (COBRA)

  • COMMANDO BATTALION FOR RESOLUTE ACTION (COBRA) was formed from the CRF in 2008.
  • These commandos have been prepared for guerrilla warfare.
  • Left-wing extremists have been deployed in the affected areas.

NATIONAL INVESTIGATION AGENCY (NIA)

  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) was formed on December 31, 2008, as an agency to fight terrorism.
  • It is an agency investigating crimes that violate the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of the country, international treaties.

INTELLIGENCE BUREAU (IB)

  • Intelligence Bureau (IB) was established in 1887 during the British rule.
  • Probably the oldest intelligence agency in the world.
  • The IB is the country’s internal intelligence agency, whose main function is to strengthen the country’s security by obtaining intelligence on the destructive activities of terrorism.
  • IB branches operate in all state capitals and major cities.
